Maxis The Explorer
I know we should be coming up with ideas for playable characters, but I really wanted to try this out. I was thinking we could use journal entries like these to help fill in the world. Also, I tried to incorporate my ideas on Maxis' character into the writing. I pictured him as a bit of an anti-social who is absolutely fascinated by the behaviors of human beings. Almost to the point of being an idiot at times.
- Spoiler:
- NOTE: What follows is an excerpt from the travel journals of Maxis. However, due to the unorganized nature of the journals, it is unclear when this entry takes place in relation to the rest of the currently recovered entries. Once again, any lost information -- be it through fire damage, deterioration, or coffee stains -- will be marked with a “…” underneath the last legible line of text.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At this point, dear reader, you may be forgiven to think that my journey has reached its abrupt end and that the recording of all of human nature will have to be put aside for safer pursuits. But that is not the case. Nor will it ever be the case. Though the incident aboard the St. Martin nearly cost me my arm, how was I supposed to know they smuggled things other than refugees and illegal aliens? Besides, coming under fire by Visceral’s flag ship was pure happenstance. It’s naval policy to hail a ship and inspect it for contraband before issuing he order to attack. Perhaps it slipped his mind. Surely had he known I was on board, I’m sure his sense of bloodlust would have given way to reason. It’s not like EA would give up an established scholar such as I just to catch a few pirates, right?
Anyway, enough pondering past events, there is still the matter of finding land while adrift on, what appears to be, the remains of a king size headboard. It’s sturdy enough to hold me afloat. Was I to bring a lover with me, one of us would no doubt freeze to death in these waters unless the prospect of dying in each other’s embrace seemed anything but stupid. Romantic? No doubt. Stupid? Very. Now as for sustenance, there are quite a good number of bodies floating around. Maybe I could get to one of them and --
…
It would appear that I had passed out due to dehydration, or maybe boredom. Whichever came first, I guess. The good news is that I have washed up on the shores near a bustling metropolis; now if I can find my bearings (and a map), I can find out just where I’ve landed and maybe get a proper meal.
As luck would have it, an old fisherman offered me some of his catch out of the kindness of his heart, at twice the going rate in any respectable market. It would appear ‘a kindness of the heart’ is an expensive luxury in these parts. Speaking of which, the city I had the (mis)fortune of waking up in is none other than ISOHunt. Yes, that ISOHunt: a hotbed of criminals and scum where pirates may begin to distribute their wares. Not that I’ve ever set foot in the city before. I am merely going by what my colleagues down at the bureau have reported. This will certainly be an interesting stop.
…
It’s been five days since my arrival, and I’ve compiled quite an interesting collection of the general populous. The people are actually a lot friendlier than the reports suggest. A little rough around the edges, to be sure, but friendly nonetheless. Their economy is based almost primarily on what the smugglers and pirates bring in. There is still a lot more crime than a normal town, but that is to be expected when all goods aren’t checked by government officials. Once I get to the nearest courier office and send my findings back to the bureau, EA will surely see that reducing the trade tax and making our goods more affordable would be a boon to everyone involved.

Re: Maxis The Explorer
This is great. I think these journal entries and more could be used for a treasure hunt sidequest in the bay of pirates. Say, your party finds the first journal entry, whish has some clues about a legendary treasure, you find more along the way and eventually find the treasure yourself, while fighting off pirates along the way.

Of course, it also has to be stressed somehow that EA owns Maxis at the moment, however. Keep that in mind. Perhaps we can make it so that EA tricked Maxis by offering him a great budget to continue his studies of human nature so long as he shared the info with him; Maxis is in fact so engrossed with his studies that he pays no attention to almost anything else and is completely unaware/has no interest in what EA even does to others with that information. Also, it might be somewhat funny if, during the final chapter of the game, after trudging through many of the trials of EA's lair, you wander into a room that completely resembles an average human bedroom, with Maxis vigorously writing away at a desk, all as our own arrangement of this song plays: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnKUyE2peDw. That kind of scene would probably very accurately represent how deep Maxis is engrossed in his own little world and how ignorant he is overall of EA's evil. Or, I suppose if you want to create a more serious mood in that situation, there's always this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2MFv2xe8yQ&feature=relmfu

Re: Maxis The Explorer
I actually considered that, and I figure we should make him genuinely believe in EA. Yeah, EA's actions are questionable at best (horrifying at worst), but maybe he's just a bit misguided. And, no, this isn't the result of brainwashing, but years of friendship.
Maybe Maxis believes that by going out and gathering this information, he can give EA a proper perspective of the world and change things from the inside, through non-violence. Obviously, this isn't going to work.
